Looking back now, I have to say the little man has been pretty good to us. As long as he has his blanket and binky, he's been a great self-soother (not that I don't miss being the one and only person who can make my baby content). However, children are like seasons and they go through different phases.

Phase 1- No Crib

About 2 weeks ago out of the blue, Ryley decided he would NOT sleep in his crib. He never climbed out, but he would arch his back and have a panic attack if we even got close to it. We tried to convert it into the toddler bed that it is also designed to be, however, he would not go for that either.

Phase 2- No Naps

So, now he has a new toddler bed. We are still trying to work on getting him to fall asleep in it without one of us the room at night. Ryley has pretty much given up naps as well! Now that he can get out of bed, he is sleeping less at night, and almost nothing during the day!

Phase 3- Make Dressing Impossible

The worst of things yet is the fact Ryley does not want to be changed! He puts up a HUGE fight when he needs his diaper or his clothes changed. I've tried everything and I cannot get him to cooperate. I hope this phase doesn't last long. And Baby Center, he could care less if he gets to choose his clothes!

Phase 4- Undecided

Since we're stumbling through all these changes right now, and since Ryley doesn't want to be changed, we brought out the Baby Bjorn potty chairs, bought some Thomas the Train underwear, and we're waiting patiently. I'm not going to push potty training right now, but it's waiting when Ryley decides to switch things up on us!

Last but not least, I'm wondering when this little man is going to get use to haircuts? He is nearly 2, and we're about to hit 20 and he still screams and yells "Ouch!" I really don't think I can handle any more resistance on this!

I also never believed int he "Terrible Two's," and I will keep telling myself that when the days are long and I find myself saying 3 prayers BEFORE 6:30 AM!!!

But, no matter how challenging things can get, I wouldn't trade it for the world!

[latest project]

This past week I attempted to make Maisey a skirt. I've made her skirts before, but this one was made with a little frustration too. I had friends to help me, and the second half of the project was more successful than the first! I planned to do it all at once, but the initial time just happened to be a late night when I had 1/2 a brain. It started out when I used my friends measurements for a much smaller sized skirt, coupled with Maisey's correct measurements. All and all it was easy and I hope to sew another this week- the fabric is already cut. It turned out way cute! I love homemade projects!!!

{Valentines Day}

I just finished this wreath tonight and with little time to spare. I can see it needs some definite tweaking, but I love how it turned out (thanks for the idea Jamie- and this great blog which I stole a couple things from this season)!

I also need to find it a good home- this is in the hallway... But really, it will only be up for a day since tomorrow is "the day."

I didn't decorate much this year, but I did manage to get my LOVE-ly baking done throughout the past two weeks and I am ready for tomorrow. After church we will have dinner with extended family, along with a "Dance It-Up Competition." The girls (Maisey and 2ND cousins Miranda and Michelle) will have so much fun- as they always do together!

I really have come to LOVE Valentine's Day... Not only for the cute color scheme I allow myself to decorate with for the month of February, but because I LOVE all the people in my life!!!

LOVE these cute cookies on a stick! My creative and inspiring friend Jamie made them for us last Valentine's Day and I couldn't resist making them this year.

The Glace icing makes things a little tedious because of it's consistency... And, I think I like the cookies better without the piping. But the end result is so worth it!

{not too long}

In the near future my little girl will completely disagree with me on EVERYTHING I like. I know it sounds grim, but she already battles me on her clothes, hair styles and accessories, shoes, jewelry, and pretty much everything else.

Lately, the princess in me has been fighting the urge to buy her more "ballerina skirts" (anything with tulle), and I am so proud of myself since she is well equipped for the time. If she surprises me , and still likes them when her others no longer fit, I will happily buy more-and they are everywhere right now, in every size but mine!

Yesterday, she told me she doesn't want to wear skirts anymore and that she will only wear dresses to church on Sunday's. Well honey, I cleaned out your wardrobe later on in the day, and you still have about 15 skirts that will take you through summer!

Hopefully she will comply because I hate it when she switches things up on me!

{Heart}

I {Heart} my valentine!

Ok, it's a little early but Maisey and I had a "Mommy-Daughter Day" yesterday and she wanted to be my early Valentine.

She got her nails done (I held out since mine take so much longer and she gets bored), we went to lunch, and she picked out new fabric for a project I'm working (she didn't approve of three others I recently chose). She sure is opinionated, but she sure is cute!

Speaking of opinions, she hardly lets me choose her hair styles anymore, but today she relinquished and let me make her hair into a heart-do!

{"Wii" Baby}

It's not often we have a girls night on a weekend but getting a whole group of close friends together can seem like an impossible task. Of course we had reason to steal the night away from our husbands because we had to celebrate the birth of Ciara's third child, Nora.We rocked it hard as we all found our groove to "Just Dance" the fun dancing Wii game.

We missed our friend who had a migraine but we were all happy with the way the night went. And I was happy all my pregnant- and the post pregnant who still got up there and bust there moves- despite the fact everyone showed up tired! The last one's standing at 1:45 AM...

Some of us were a little giddy by that point. Thank goodness for afternoon church.
I actually was able to have a "jammie ju ju day" since Ryley was too sick to attend nursery- not that my prior knowledge of that kept me up late. I got home and was still going strong (unfortunately for Chad) and couldn't fall asleep until after 3:15 AM... That is always the case after girls nights- but it is so worth it!

The calories were also worth it- but hopefully we danced what we ate! And there was a whole lot more not pictured, like killer cream puffs. We are such good bakers.

And most of all, thanks Julie for sharing your new BIG T.V.- I mean Pete!

{pump it up}

Chad took Ryley to "Pump It Up Jr." this past week and he loved it! Since Maisey turned 6, we haven't been able to go to the convenient "Jr" location. With Maisey in school it was the perfect time for the boys to hit it. I guess it took about 25 minutes to get Ryley out of the "Cozy Coupe" but he eventually took on bigger ventures.
(I knew we should have got him one for Christmas! Maisey hot pink one at this age and loved it!)

{new year}

We spent time with friends and family this New Year and we are looking forward to another year full of memories.

I can't wait to see what new talents and interests Maisey will develop this upcoming year! I can't wait to see how much Ryley grows (literally and developmentally)! He's already such an independent boy! I can't wait to read lots of new books with old friends at The Book and Brunch Society! I also can't wait to see how what kind of parties we will host this year! Most of all, I can't wait for all the "little" things in life! You know, the oftentimes subtle yet life changing events that we all go through that make us into the people we are. The "little" things I'm talking about may not be noticeable to others, but can surely be identified by some.

Since I can't seem to get a slideshow to play in a "post" anymore it will sit a top this one.

This year we decided to visit Eugene and Hood River for Christmas. We've done this every year past (with the exception of last year), and things were hopping. My family celbrates on Christmas Eve and so there isn't much of a clash in tradition. The kids got everything they could ever want and so did Chad and I. After driving home late on Christmas Eve we headed to Hood River the next day. We had a great time with both sides of the family and we are blessed to have family nearby.

Cousins Maisey, Ruby (12 this week), and Peyton (nearly 9), love to make up dances. This is a dance they made up and the funniest part is Ryley who thinks he's part of it (just listen to him laugh and grunt)!

Nearly every Guenther enjoyed dancing to this new Wii game Ruby got for her birthday, "Dance It Up." Here is another clip of all the fun people had.

{Pittock Mansion}

A newer tradition...

This year Chad and I went to Pittock Mansion alone. I love touring the mansion as I try to imagine the life the Pittock's lived back then. Each room is beautifully decorated in a new style every holiday season. I'm working on a slide show (I've forgotten how) and so this is a little sneak peek. These are my kind of trees. They have ornaments from top to bottom! By looking at ours you can surely tell a 20 month old lives in the house (hence the bare bottom half). What talent this artist has. Last but not least, a rare photo of the two of us!

{holiday crafts}

I love to craft but I always wait until it's too late in the season to work on projects I can use at the current and appropriate time. I've now decided I won't let this happen again and I am going to start making next years Christmas decorations this January.

This "project" below takes no talent and hardly any time, but I've been wanting to make it for a couple years and I finally tried it out.

For Christmas in Hood River, and for my mother in-law, I am going to make some of these to adorn her very "Country Living" like dwelling. They will look so cool around the cold property, and I plan on making ice candle votive's as well.

Here is a "tester" and indeed it looks like one. *Note to self: make sure the freezer is really cleaned out and level so the foliage doesn't shift into mass groups leaving great big gaps!

It was an unusually relaxing weekend around here!

- 6:42 on Saturday, a late wake-up call

- 10:30 The Brunch and Book Society. At first the book was real depressing... but the after affect, well, it had me in tears which was rather embarrassing.

- 12 o'clock Our little princess attended a Princess Tea Party where she had a wonderful time. ( Note to the wonderful hostess: today we just had to throw away the kazoos in fear of my being reported to Child Welfare since they were making me extremely edgy).

-2 o'clock, our turn to babysit for date swap.

-4 o'clock, made YUMMY BBQ Chicken pizza for dinner to share with friends.

And my friends, this was a relaxing day!

Today I was kept home from church by Ry man because he has a green nose, cough, and semi-cranky demeanor. We had visits from our Home teachers and Visiting teachers, and we also baked 300 Spritz cookies!!! I had no idea that would take about 3 hours, so I ended up making dinner way to late, and I threw it in the fridge for tomorrow. It is now nearly 8 and Chad and I need to eat still. At least the kids are in bed!

Here is my very eager helper. Chad was as equally important in getting the job done! Ryley, well, let's just say he is starting to get into more and more trouble. He dumped out a HUGE $12 or so dollar bottle of sprinkles... To sum it up, he kept us on our toes!

{the best christmas Pageant ever}

Well, the title might try to say it all but I didn't think so. We headed to Hood River over the weekend to attend our great friends The Sorenson's fifth baby blessing and we also had a chance to hang out with the family a little. We had cake for Chad's birthday (it was on 12/1- the big 35, and he has forgiven me for not posting a Happy Birthday blog about it), and Maisey and I attended a Holiday craft show and theatre production of "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" with my niece Ruby and wonderful Sister in-law Jill. It was pretty cute and only a little cheesy! We got home after bedtime Sunday night and although it was a quick trip (we didn't leave until mid-day Saturday), we enjoyed every minute of it! Maisey was up well past her bedtime and wouldn't pose, but she really did have fun!

{zoo lights}

Even though it was a record 8 degrees last night, we hit the Zoo Lights, just to "get it over with". This year we felt very prepared in our layers (especially Chad in his thermal long johns, 2 pairs of fleece pants, and jeans) and we were just thankful it wasn't raining. The Pea cock is always my fave.
This was Ryley's expression upon arrival, and even though his looks says it all, "Are you guys crazy!" he loved it, particularly the "toot toot" (since he's into trains).

{thanksgiving}

This year we spent Thanksgiving with my family in Eugene. We had a nice relaxing couple days and we always leave missing everyone even more, despite the fact we just spent time with them. The only down side was that easy-going Ryley proved to be a horrible sleeper while we were away. The lack of sleep, coupled with my uncontrollable sneezing led to our decision to come home a night earlier than planned.

While we visited we also had family visit from the Seattle area. It was so nice to see my great aunt, second cousin, and her daughter and husband. Maisey was ecstatic and had an ear to ear smile the entire time she spent with her cousins.

The girls met up at the hotel and went for a swim.

I love seeing family together and I can't wait to see EVERYONE again.

{ready}

With all the major Christmas shopping done (all that remains are the nieces and nephews), we are ready for Christmas. The house is decorated and we've been plugging away at reading, watching, and listening to all the excessive Christmas media we own. It is all so fun (with the exception of Ryley's grabby hands which he remains to keep off the tree)... I think we only broke 4 ornaments while trimming the artificial piece of art.

My little elf is as ready as I am.

{holiday festival}

Last weekend we went to The German American School and attended their holiday festival. We were on the prowl for German Christmas gifts for the in-laws and we were successful. I've decided people who are over 50 are impossible to buy for! We also tasted some warm Kinder Punch (the kiddie version of gluhweine) and we picked some up for the fast approaching Guenther Christmas celebration. Oh, how I love this time of year!

{tis the season}

In this house we are doing everything in our power not to think about Christmas... Although we've been able to resist putting up the tree (until Thanksgiving night anyway), we haven't been able to resist listening to Christmas music and watching an occasional Christmas flick.We've also been enjoying hot cocoa,

Painting Christmas ornaments, and wrapping presents (less the bows that fall off prematurely).

Better earlier than later, right?

This past week Maisey made blankets for children in need at the annual Linus Project. She was so proud of herself last year and this year was no different. I was extremely excited to see her joy since I myself love to serve others. I constantly think about my children and the ways they will choose to express gratitude for all of their blessings, hoping that someday they will learn by example. I just have to say I'm grateful for Girl Scouts because it really parallels our teachings as members of the church.

At another activity this past week Maisey also made hygiene kits for the needy and she was given one to bring home to disburse on her own accordance. On Saturday morning we stuffed some treats into the sack along with some money and set out to find just the "right" beggar on the corner. She was so happy to give her bag to someone in need and we decided we will make several more for this holiday season, and hopefully throughout the rest of the year.

This was the fleece Maisey chose- against my persuasion of course!
